It's an easy herb plant to look after as long as you ensure that the roots aren't waterlogged or too dry throughout the year, which is great for those just getting started with their herb gardens.

The best time to harvest Tarragon is in the morning when the oils are most concentrated. Snip the stems near the base using scissors or pruning shears. Regular harvesting encourages bushier growth, ensuring a steady supply of fresh leaves. Tarragon is a culinary powerhouse, lending its distinctive anise-like flavour to a variety of dishes. You can add fresh Tarragon leaves to salads, soups, and sauces to impart a subtle, sophisticated flavour. Alternatively, mix finely chopped French Tarragon with softened butter to create a delectable herb butter. Perfect for spreading on bread or melting over grilled vegetables.

Latin Name: Artemisia dracunculus 'Tolergon'

Type: Perennial

Soil Type: Free draining

Where should I plant this variety? Full sun

How tall does it grow? Approx 80cm

How much space does it need? Approx 40cm

When does it flower? Flowers irregularly, but does develop yellow flowers.

Top care tips: Free draining soil is important.

Delivery Information

French Tarragon will always be one of our best selling herbs and also one of our favourites to use in the kitchen. ‘Artemisia dracunculus’ might sound like the name of a James Bond villain, but it is also delicious and versatile with a strong aniseed flavour that I could just eat all day.

Ideally French Tarragon will enjoy being grown in free draining and sunny conditions. We don’t have a space in our garden that is free draining enough so we keep our Tarragon in a planter. It is frost tender so will require protection during a ‘normal’ British winter. It cannot be grown from seed and is instead propagated from cuttings.

Really important to note that this plant is different and distinctive to Russian Tarragon, which lacks the flavour associated with this variety. Annoyingly Russian Tarragon is much easier to grow - why is that always the case!?

Tarragon is a supremely popular herb. It is one that we find is called for in recipes a lot and you rarely seem to have access to it when you need it!
