Introducing Orange Thyme
Have you grown Orange Thyme before? Trust me, this plant is just as amazing as it sounds!
Orange Thyme is a variety that really needs to be smelled to be believed. It really does smell distinctively ‘orangey’. We always describe the flavour of this variety as being half way between traditional Thyme and Lemon Thyme. The beautiful musky flavour of Thyme is certainly retained but coupled with a delicious citrus ‘kick’.
How to grow Orange Thyme:
Orange Thyme will enjoy being planted somewhere sunny and free draining. It’s perfect for a pot, hanging basket or a free draining herb bed. It is fully hardy and will stand up to winter frosts. It is really important to ensure that it is in free draining conditions as it won’t enjoy being waterlogged.
Why you should grow it?
This is a seriously versatile flavour. You can use this variety in dishes that would require traditional Thyme and it will lend a new flavour to a favourite dish. It’s perfect for adding to fish or meat dishes, and we love adding this to a strong cheese also.
It is regularly featured in our ‘boozy herb collections’. Years of working at BBC Good Food Show and talking to amazing drinks producers persuaded us that this variety is fantastic with gin.
Is Orange Thyme a variety that you have heard of before?
I genuinely hope so because I think that Orange Thyme is amazing.
