"Society Garlic. This is truly a plant to get excited about. At Urban Herbs we love garlic – we really love it. Is there any dish that garlic doesn’t enhance? (Possibly breakfast cereal). Allow us to introduce you to the fantastic edible that is Society Garlic. Firstly, this plant is really easy to grow. It prefers light, sandy soil and in full sun – but we have found that it isn’t too fussy. It is perennial and returns each year, full of flavour and bursting with life. We suggest pruning it back regularly to encourage new healthy growth. It will grow to around 50cm, the stems are really lovely and architectural. Why is it called society garlic? Historically this variety was famed for providing you with wonderful garlic flavour without giving you the associated garlic breath. The delicious garlic flavoured stems can be used to season a variety of dishes in which garlic would be required. We love seasoning meat with this plant’s finely chopped stems. Society Garlic is native to South Africa and we are reliably informed that this plant is used on the outdoor South African barbeques to season the meat. The flowers are edible too and can be used to provide an edible decoration. I know that we often talk about a plant being our favourite. But this has to be in the official Urban Herbs top 5 amazing plants. We’ve been waiting to introduce you to this one for ages. Really hope that you enjoy this as much as we do!
