Samphire will traditionally grow in coastal areas or salt marshes. However, Urban Herbs is based in Birmingham (in the UK), which is in the centre of the country - it is hard to get further from the coast. And yet we are able to grow Samphire outside our backdoor. We just think that is so incredibly cool.

We recommend potting a Samphire plant into a larger pot and then placing that pot into a container, into which you can place a salt water solution. One teaspoon of salt to a pint of water is the recommended ratio. The salt water soaks into the root system and gives your Samphire the salty taste that you will recognise and love.

We have to stress that this is experimental growing. It is an experiment that has been happening for a few years now and the feedback from customers has been very positive. People seem to universally agree that growing Samphire like this is really fun and exciting. You won't necessarily grow huge quantities but we have found that over the last few years, it has certainly kept us furnished with garnishes to accompany fish dishes.
